Empowering Communities
The American Red Cross empowers ordinary people to perform extraordinary
acts in emergency situations. We train. We mobilize. We connect donors and volunteers
to those in urgent need of a helping hand. Whether it is a hurricane or a heart
attack; a call for blood or a call for help, the American Red Cross is there.
Last year in our community, because of people like you we were able to respond
to 232 local disasters, including 224 residential fires. We helped 1,095 affected
individuals and 334 families with emergency food, shelter and supplies.
Together, we can transform a life in crisis into a life of hope.
Red Cross Monitoring H1N1 Flu Situation
The Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross is aware of the
current H1N1 flu cases in the United States and Mexico. Currently, the
American Red Cross is monitoring the situation and the American Red Cross
National Headquarters is in close contact with federal and state health
officials, including the Center for Disease Control.
The Red Cross urges all to
take precautionary measure and Be Red Cross Ready:
Remember to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or
sneeze; throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or
sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and
limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread
that way.
For people seeking information on H1N1 flu, the CDC Web site provides
the latest information, which can also be obtained by calling 1-800-CDC-INFO.
For general information on seasonal flu and how to stay healthy, please refer to
the Seasonal
Flu Checklist on RedCross.org.
Tea at the Westover Estate
On April 18th our Legacy Circle Society and Tiffany Circle Society of Women Leaders jointly sponsored a tea at the Westover Estate in El Dorado Hills.
Sara Gore, Placer District American Red Cross volunteer Youth Initiative Advisor and Roxanna Sprague, Placer District, Sacramento Sierra Chapter volunteer in the “info” booth at the beginning of the 3-day event. A portion of the booth included a mock shelter with an emergency cot, blankets and Rescue-Annie and Rescue-Infant simulating what an ARC shelter might look like.
Are you 14-to-18 years of age and looking for a way to
make a difference? Then visit the Sacramento Sierra Chapter Youth Volunteers page. Since the founding of the Junior Red Cross in 1917, youth
and the Red Cross have been partners. Today, the involvement of young
people with the Red Cross is more important than ever. Our goal is to
provide young people with meaningful opportunities for education, training
and volunteer/community service so that they may remain a part of the Red
Cross family throughout their lives.

By the time you read this information, an American
will have died from sudden cardiac arrest.
More than 200,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest every year, and up
to 50,000 of those deaths could be prevented by a trained person initiating
the Cardiac Chain of Survival and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). All
Sacramento Sierra Chapter Adult and Child CPR courses teach defibrillation
skills. We invite you to learn more about the technology and training that can
save the life of your family member, co-worker or friend. Contact us at
